Case Study: TOMORROWLAND WINTER — CRYSTALS
Project: Tomorrowland Winter Crystals
Location: Alpe d’Huez, France
Scope: Large-scale scenic fabrication | Custom resin elements | Finishing & painting
Magical Crystals in the Frozen Night
High in the French Alps, where snow, music and imagination come together, Tomorrowland Winter transforms the mountains of Alpe d’Huez into an immersive world of fantasy.
For this project, Colordrops brought a collection of oversized crystals to life — designed to radiate from the stage and become part of the magical landscape surrounding the festival experience.
Two distinct crystal shapes were developed, each carefully fabricated to create the impression of natural, luminous formations emerging from the frozen environment.
From Realistic Form to Illusion
The challenge was to make the crystals feel both solid and almost impossible — like mineral formations that had somehow begun to glow from within.
The pieces were produced in thick, durable transparent red resin, allowing light to interact with the material and reveal depth throughout the crystal forms.
Their realistic geometry and substantial scale gave them the presence of natural rock formations, while the finishing pushed them into a more fantastical direction.
Candy Gloss. Solid Light.
To achieve the final appearance, the resin surfaces were finished in a custom glossy candy effect.
The translucent red base combined with the high-gloss painted finish created the illusion of solid light trapped inside the crystals — vibrant, saturated and almost otherworldly.
Rather than simply reproducing the appearance of a crystal, the treatment was designed to make the objects feel like they were emitting their own energy.
Art, Fabrication & Atmosphere
Tomorrowland’s environments are built around immersive storytelling, where scenography, light, music and architecture come together to create a complete experience. The festival’s winter editions are known for spectacular stages set against the Alpine landscape.
For Colordrops, the crystal elements were another exercise in translating that atmosphere into physical form.
The process brought together scenic fabrication, material knowledge, surface finishing and artistic interpretation — taking a simple visual idea and turning it into an object with physical presence, depth and character.
Colordrops & Tomorrowland Winter
These crystals may be only one element within a much larger stage environment, but their role is essential: they help establish the visual language of the world around them.
From transparent resin to glossy candy surfaces, every detail was considered to make the crystals feel believable, durable and unmistakably magical.
A frozen world. A glowing illusion. Crystals made to shine through the night.
